There are various ways to work with attachments in email messages you receive.
See, I don't think I should have to tweak my gmail settings to tell Apple Mail not to download ALL of my mail. Even if it's just headers, I don't want it to. I'm using mail for an automator program-I'm not using it for actual email so I don't need to sync it to my gmail. In the Mail app on your Mac, select a message that includes attachments.

Open an attachment in an app: Double-click the attachment.
Preview an attachment without opening it: Select the attachment, then press the Space bar, or force click the attachment.

Save email attachments

Choose Message > Remove Attachments.
The message remains in the mailbox and is annotated to indicate that all attachments were manually removed. For IMAP accounts, attachments are also deleted from the mail server and can’t be retrieved.
When you delete a message that includes an attachment, the attachment is deleted too. To change this setting, choose Mail > Preferences, click General, click the “Remove unedited downloads” pop-up menu, then choose an option. Mail doesn’t delete attachments that you have saved.
Mail automatically downloads attachments you receive based on the download option you set in Account Information preferences in Mail.
If you send or forward images or PDF documents you receive to other people, you can mark up the attachments with comments, drawings, or a signature before you send them.

Using Google Takeout

- In the next window scroll down and click on Download your data option.

- After clicking on All Mail data included, a pop-up window will open then first deselect Include all messages in the mail then you will be able to select which type of messages you want to include, click OK. scroll down click on Next Step.
- As you click on Next Step you will reach on the top then click on Send download link via email and choose a file format to the download and preferred delivery method from the drop-down menu. Now go to the bottom and click on Create Archive.
- After clicking on Create Archive, a message will show to apprise you that an archive is being created, please wait. When it is finally created, you will find a single file containing all the messages in an MBOX format.
Download Gmail Emails as PDF
Mac Mail
You can also download messages from Gmail into a PDF format, but this method has a limitation. You can only save your emails as PDF one by one, see the steps below to perform this method:
- First, login your Gmail account, and open that email which you want to save as PDF.
- If you open the email then go for the Print all icon and click it.
- When you click on Print all, a new window will open in a new tab with the Print option, then set all the settings if required and click the Print. Finally, your emails will save as PDF.
